- BYSANCE

- OMAYADS/ABBASIDS
- The Omayads were the main successors to Mohammed and ruled until 750,
when they were overthrown by Shiite Moslems. Jews in Babylonia played
a leading role in the Omayad dominions.
After being overthrown, the Omayads escaped to Spain, where they founded
Cordoba.
Although the Shittes overthrew the Omayads, they were unable to secure
their rule. Instead, the Abbasids rose to power. Their leader, Abas, was
an uncle of Mohammed, and they ruled the Moslem world and the land of
Israel for the next five centuries. The Jews also played a leading role
in Abassad rule.

- OTTOMAN TURKS
- By the mid-1500s, the Turkish empire was at the height of its power,
with Suleiman the Magnificent rebuilding Jerusalem in 1536. It was Suleiman
who built the present walls around the Old City of Jerusalem.
The Ottomans were generally lenient toward the Jews, and it was under
their rule that the land of Israel began to experience the first significant
resettlement of Jews. They ruled until 1917, when the British took control
of Palestine as a result of World War I.
